Thanks, I just smoked my 3rd bowl and I think I did an OK job packing it lasted about 45, 50m and had to reloght 2 times. 2nd one was worse then the first and had to throw it out. It's super nice! I already have my eye on 3 pipes 🙈 I hear it's good to rotate them troughout the week? I'm really going for just cigars and pipes instead of cigarettes, I feel much better about it and since the cigars I don't like the taste of ciggies anymore.Nice. Many of us started with aromatics and drugstore blends, like Captain Black and Sir Walter Raleigh. Once you get a feel for packing and gentle smoking, you'll be ready for the huge array of pipes and tobaccos that are out there. Welcome to the pipe-smoking pastime.
Just be careful with the Aromatics and full Virginia tobacco as they tend to "Bite" your tongue, being where you are you have a great selection like HU directors cut and dockworker to name a couple. Thanks, I just smoked my 3rd bowl and I think I did an OK job packing it lasted about 45, 50m and had to reloght 2 times. 2nd one was worse then the first and had to throw it out. EDIT: Any recommendations on good tobacco to try?
Yeah the chemical bite from the infusion makes me smoke a little to careful I think. I went to a gem of a tobacco store, like old school, old guy behind the counter with a well of knowlage and passion, and he gave me this to try. In about to light up the pipe! I got these jars aswell to store cause i heard the tins aren't so great for long term storage. I'm exited to try! It's the Peterson of Dublin Nightcap. Latakia, oriental And perique mix |
Nightcap is a great smoke, quite strong and smokey, its an "English" blend and may take a bit of getting used to, hope you enjoy it.

Just had my second bowl after dinner and it might be the food or coffee, but I'm getting a whole new array of flavors now. I visited that site you guys recommended, which had a review on it and a lot of people recommend letting it air too, but I'm not sure about that cause I'm worried it'll dry out? Any experience with that? It really feels like a you hate it or love it kiunda tobacco!Nightcap is a great smoke, quite strong and smokey, its an "English" blend and may take a bit of getting used to, hope you enjoy it.
There are varying views on how dry tobacco should be when smoked. And it varies from blend to blend. If you're not going to smoke the whole tin within a couple of weeks, I would transfer it to a canning jar with a lid that seals. It will help keep the tobacco from drying out. A crude rule of thumb on dryness when smoked is to pinch the tobacco between your thumb and index finger. If hold that shape, it's too damp. If it falls apart or crumbles it's too dry. You want it to be springy but not sticky. That's sometimes hard to achieve with aromatics that are heavily topped.Just had my second bowl after dinner and it might be the food or coffee, but I'm getting a whole new array of flavors now. Thank you, I will follow your advice! I'll probably get one more jar and a tobacco that isn't that aromatic but more neutral cause both the Edelman and nightcap are very heavily flavored and at the moment my pipe replaces cigarettes. Not by choice, I just like it better. (jeez I'm getting old😂) thanks for the finger pinch tip aswell that's very helpful! YouTube is full of different opinions and Google results mostly come up with pipe stuff to buy when looking for tips. I hope this pipe will last me a couple of years, I like the size and smoke duration for now. There are varying views on how dry tobacco should be when smoked. And it varies from blend to blend. Pipe smoking is a lot of fun and it's an exciting world to get into at the beginning so I'll give you some advice almost no one follows. Take it slow. With respect to tobacco: I would try to stick to popular accessible blends, like the ones recommended by @Fusion. Avoid challenging blends, like English blends or straight Virginias. The ribbon-cut (rubbed out) versions of Capstan Blue and St. Bruno come to mind as do the various Amphora blends, which are available in pouches. Don't rush into buying pipes and lots of tobacco blends. Your knowledge and taste will evolve very quickly and you will probably make different choices even a month or two from now. Yes, having a rotation is a good idea—eventually. But resting or rotating pipes in not really that urgent an issue now, especially if you keep the one you have clean.
Thanks. Your pipe looks as though it would be pretty comfortable to clench in your mouth without having to take it in and out. Personally, I think that helps you slow down and let the smoke drift gently in and out of your mouth without puffing. The pipe and smoke stay cool and flavorful, with less chance of tongue bite and the bowl lasts longer. It's even better if your mind is focused on a task, like writing or reading.Thank you, I will follow your advice! I know, I know, last purchase I promise! 🙈 Nice mellow tobacco and a lighter pipe, the Jean Claude is actually quite heavy on my teeth, this one weight almost nothing. Nice pipe, i see its new but it looks as though its been around in the lounge for a while, the stem should be black, that green tinge is from tobacco smoke (unless its just the picture), needs a clean.I know, I know, last purchase I promise! 🙈 Nice mellow tobacco and a lighter pipe, the Jean Claude is actually quite heavy on my teeth, this one weight almost nothing. Yeah I wanted a mellower taste, not so strong smokey or fruity flavour but something I don't have to crave to like. This gentle vanilla does it for me. I looked at a more heavy vanilla but luckily decided against it.
