Decorating the house (with plywood).

Number Nine:
Dragging out boxes that haven't been used since last season.

Number Eight:
Last minute shopping in crowded stores.

Number Seven:
Regular TV shows pre-empted for 'Specials'.

Number Six:
Family coming to stay with you..

Number Five:
Family and friends from out of state calling you..

Number Four:
Buying food you don't normally buy . . . and in large quantities.

Number Three:
Days off from work.

Number Two:
Candles.

And the Number One reason Hurricane Season is like Christmas:
At some point you're probably going to have a tree in your house!

We did OK.

The worst thing was no power for nine days.

Before Katrina, we used to say:
"We don't run from hurricanes, we drink them."

So true. I live in Baton Rouge and was without power for 7 days.

What about the hum of generators all night long? Makes it a pain to sleep especially in 85 degree room.

Now it's landfill.
At least we were able to retrieve some of our stuff.

Good for you. If you have/had proper insurance should never be in question. Did it take a long time for your settlement. So many days without power and a home sucks.

What made it hard for you all are all the people that had no or the wrong insurance who expected payouts from the taxpayer.

I am in south TX away from the storm. San Antonio is packed with people from the coast. Ike is a doozy. God Speed to the Gulf Coast.

I paid dearly for excellent insurance.
They don't like to pay.
When I finally prevailed, I was paid policy maximum.
It took nearly a year to get it all.

that is my point. you paid, had the right insurance, and still had to fight. I am glad it worked out for you.

I'm not about to defend those who chose not to protect themselves
and then wanted the rest of us to fix things for them.
But, they told us the levees would hold.
Mortgage companies didn't require flood insurance.
You also had the "I didn't flood for Betsy," people.

Me, I'd have to live on top of a big ol' hill before I wouldn't
get flood insurance. The less you need it, the cheaper it is.
My house didn't get water into the main floor; it was built high enough.
It got ripped up by one of the many mini-tornados spawned by the storm.
