I have an end table that I want to convert into a cabinet humi. I need to order the lining material. Any suggestions on where to look and what width do I need. 1/8 or 1/4 inch do the job?

Thanks

I've bought from Rockler before. Depending on how good you are you can input the measurements you need and minimize your cutting. They matched my measurements exactly so that all I had to do was trim. I oversized by like an inch to give myself some wiggle room. I highly recommend Rockler. Trouble free.

Rockler is as expensive as it comes for any kind of hardwood lumber. I found a place in Redmond, WA that sells Spanish cedar in small amounts at reasonable prices. Sometimes they even have it 1/4 inch thick. Check www.hardwoodssupply.com.

You can also use veneer over 1/4 inch thick MDF or plywood to make a continuous seamless look. Paper backed veneer is not hard to work with, and Rockler's price for veneer is not that bad.

I purchased mine HERE. It is not a solid sheet; but cut into four pieces: (2) 4" X 25" and (2) 8 1/2" X 25". It arrived wet, so it needs to dry before it's workable, and kept pressed, so it doesn't warp while drying. Finally, it arrived in two days, but shipping was very expensive, and they only offer one option. G/L with the project!

Thanks for the tips. I do have a planer so that should expand my options. I have used woodcraft, but never Rocklers. I will check it ot. I haven't taken any measurments yet.
Marianne,

Look in your yellow pages for "hardwood dealers" - since you have a planner I assume you have a table saw - so going to a hardwood dealer will get you the best price rather than paying the premium that Rocklers or Woodcraft charges. I have a Woodcraft near me - haven't been impressed with any of the wood they have on hand.

If you can't find any in the yellow pages - ask any local lumber yard - they will know where one is located, or at least they should.

Remember to wear an air filter mask when working with Spanish Cedar the fine dust will kill your lungs.
Yes - always good to remind people of this. I have done this a few times - go to rip something and forget to grab the mask. You get a good breath full of that dust and your lungs will go on stike!

Wear a mask and use dust collection tools when possible!!!!!!

as i was looking at the post i clicked on a few of the links and i noticed something that rockler offered.

now that's planning. to build it yourself. i don't think that you could actually use it because there are regulations to how people must be intombed.....all i have to say is..damn. just thought of something i wonder if you could make this into a stand up humidor. what a conversation piece.

You could scale it down and make it for a single like a GOF

I recommend going to a local cabinet shop and asking for shorts. You will end up with boards 12"-15" but if its just lining butt them end to end. People dont generally stuff their entire head in your cabinet humidor to check it out ;)

If you dont have a cabinet shop near bye, a lumber yard is your best bet. This might be difficult because most lumber yards consider Spanish cedar to be exotic wood and may not carry it.

Here is a link to a wood directory.

give it a shot, you may end up having someone close bye that will give you what they want, or cant use.

Good luck!
