I took apart the stem of my new bent briar and saw a metal piece at the end of the stem that looked a lot like a screw. I looked it up online and I think it might be the filter? Should I remove it?
General opinion says just take it out, it can actually increase condensation in the pipe chamber (metal, wood, heat). normally the idea is that it stops baccy being sucked into the mouth.
As a point of information, many pipe carvers will put these in to protect the pipes from breakage while in transit. Helps strengthen the joint between the shank and stem. Or so an old-timer tried to convince me. I've only seen them in bulk pipes that we ordered from Lebanon once (don't ask).
If you can take the piece out, chances are good it isn't a stinger as I've heard most of these need to be sawed off to be taken off.
And even if it doesn't pullout easy take a hacksaw and cut everything but the threads off. Open up the tiny hole left with a series of drill bits.
