If you haven't seen this British Honda commercial, it's really worth a look, especially if you're a Rube Goldberg fan. I know you'll appreciate it!!

Cog Honda commercial

There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again. The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. By the time it was over, they were ready to change professions.

The film cost six million dollars (holy moly!) and took three months to complete including a full engineering of the sequence. In addition, it's two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a lifetime. However, it is fast becoming the most downloaded advertisement in Internet history. Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in "free" viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!). When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation -- including the costs.

There are six and only six hand-made Accords in the world. To the horror of Honda engineers, the film makers disassembled two of them to make the film. Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars. The voice over is Garrison Keillor.

When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off their chairs when they found out it was for real. Oh. And, about those funky windshield wipers. On the new Accords, the windshield wipers have water sensors and are designed to start doing their thing automatically as soon as they become wet. It looks a bit weird in the commercial.

I would like to thank my friend Dave for showing me this.

Poker,

The advert is COOL, and am glad to have seen it and thank you for posting it, but, Poker, my main man, Poker, the man who ALWAYS makes such sense and is such a stogie guru!

Let me get this straight. This two-minute segment that cost 6 million smakcers, took 3 months and 606 takes. It's supposed to be "For Real?"

The flick is definitely cool, but "for real?"

I don't think so.

Christ! Even at SmokeyMo's prices I couldn't smoke 6 million bucks worth of smokes in two minutes, but, agreed, I'd like to have 606 takes at trying!!!!

Best,
Brit

Yep... it's all real. Keep in mind that this commercial is not for the American market. The Europeans and Japanese are much more serious about their cars than Americans. It only makes sense that this ad would not be meant for the American market. When it comes to automobiles, the US always gets the watered down version, or is among the last markets to see a car... if at all. Not only do other countries get the good cigars, but they also get the better cars.

go to the link & click on all the news clip links concerning this commercial.

Yes, its for real & might be more realistic when you consider some of the factors involved...

who knows just how many folks were involved from beginning to the end (each with a paycheck)

according to the news clips...
606 actual takes on film
over four near-sleepless days of filming
one month of script approval
two months of concept drawings
four months of development and testing

Two hand-made pre-production Accords - there were only six in existence in the entire world - were needed for the exercise, one of them being ripped apart and cannibalised to the considerable distress of Honda engineers

months of post production

more than twice as long, and therefore twice as pricey, as normal car ads

the film had used so many spare parts that two articulated lorries were required to take them away.

how much? i can't believe you're trying to make a profit off this - it just goes to show you what a cigar smoker will do to get more money to buy cigars. :D and a great ad btw.
