Nice acquisitions! I have a Colt Diamondback in .38 Special from the 70’s that I absolutely love. I’ve never shot it’s bigger brother, the Python, but I hear they’re the cat’s meow.

Did you pick it up at the CMP in Talladega?
I ordered it when the expert grades first became available and it was delivered quickly. If I remember correctly, the store had been closed at the time due to Covid. One of these days, I would like to make the 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta and see if they have any 1903a3s available. I also wouldn’t mind picking up a field or service grade garand with old wood stocks if they are available and in decent shape.Did you pick it up at the CMP in Talladega?

Will they let you use a retention holster?Until recently, all of my competitive shooting has been in matches or divisions within matches that start from low-ready position (gun out of holster, pointed at the ground). I’ve just recently started shooting in divisions where the time starts with the gun holstered and wrists above shoulders.
All of my holsters are either concealment or “duty” type holsters that aren’t ideal for a competition setting where speed is much more important than retention or comfort. But properly setup, offset and dropped holsters are expensive and I’m notoriously cheap. So a trip to Ace Hardware, a bit of tinkering, and $12 later, I present you with the spared-every-expense Junk|Works custom holsterI ended up dropping it 1.5” lower, smoothed out the retention release, and got a decent angle with a couple of shims without a substantial weight increase.
I’ll head to the range to test it out tomorrow and probably make some tweaks, but it feels pretty good in my dry-fire runs today.

Yes. There are no holsters specifically outlawed in USPSA/Steel Challenge as long as they meet the division requirements. The Range Master does have the ability to make a ruling that a particular holster can’t be used for safety reasons. Will they let you use a retention holster?
Those things make me cringe when I see them used by folks under stress from a shot timer.
SERPA = Scares Every Range-officer and People in Attendance 🤣Yes. There are no holsters specifically outlawed in USPSA/Steel Challenge as long as they meet the division requirements. The Range Master does have the ability to make a ruling that a particular holster can’t be used for safety reasons.
The Blackhawk Serpa has a retention release that puts the trigger finger in a potentially unsafe position during draw, and that’s the only holster I’ve heard of that frequently is ruled unsafe. I agree with that sentiment after seeing several almost-screwups.
Mine is a Safariland GLS and the retention release is actuated by the middle finger when it’s on the grip, so no hazard of a negligent discharge during draw.
