I had some extra cigars lying around so I thought I might do a little infusion experiment. The cigars in question are Oliveros Classic. I am not a big fan of these babies so I figured I had nothing to lose.

Please note that I am not trying to "save" these cigars or make them better. All I am really trying to do is see what happens when bedding the smokes with different mates. If they turn out to be any good, all the better.

As you can see in the photo, I have three infusion experiments going. Left to right we have Orange Peel, Cinnamon Stick and Whole Bean Coffee. Each quart storage bag contains seven churchill cigars, some infusion element and a passive humidification system.

Orange Peel. I learned a valuable lesson here. DO NOT INFUSE YOUR CIGARS WITH <ST1:pORANGE </ST1:pPEEL! It smells like :BS. The smell of orange peel and tobacco individually are fine. Together, :BS. Also, the cigars absorbed all of the moisture from the orange peel so fast that there were starting to explode. They were sopping wet and cracking. Not good.

Cinnamon Stick. When I put my nose in the bag, I can smell the cinnamon but it is kind of faint. When I smell an individual cigar there is almost no transference. I am going to add in about five or six more cinnamon sticks to see if that will help at all.

Whole Bean Coffee. As I suspected, this one seems to be working the best. When I smell the whole bag, the richness of the coffee is dominant. I pretty much cannot smell tobacco at all. When I smell an individual cigar the aroma is like a good morning cup.

From here, I am going to put the Orange Peel back in the Tupperdor without the orange peels or humidifier and hope they calm down. If not, I'll just check 'em. I'll add more cinnamon to the Cinnamon Stick bag and more than likely, smoke a Whole Bean Coffee later tonight.

I'll let you all know how it went tomorrow.

Good looking experiment. It's always fun to tinker and with those Oliveros, you can't do any worse. :r I know that another member tried the coffee infusion (although I think it was grounds) and also enjoyed the results. Good luck. :tu

I have infused some lesser quality cigars with good bourbon. I took a natural sponge (do not use the antibacterial sponges), cut it about the size of a quarter and then soaked it with the bourbon and sealed them in a virgin plastic shoebox making sure that the sponge was not touching the cigars. I also made sure that the plastic shoebox was clean (wiped it down with distilled water) so not to pick up the smell of a new plastic container. The cigars remained idle for about 15 days. I had to make sure that the cigars did not dry out. The cigars did not burn any smoother than before, but this time they were a fair to good smoke with a hint of the bourbon. Next time I don't think I will waste the bourbon or select a little better quality cigar.:ss

CCC - Thanks for doing and showing the process. I have been keeping whole coffee beans in my humi and I love the smell.

Maybe instead of cinnamon sticks you could find a coffee that is already coated with say cinnamon (or orange) oils and that would speed up the process? Just a thought.:2

You are infusing all your cigars with coffee beans? You must really like coffee (or really hate cigars)!!! :r

Thanks for the tips dwhitacre and gnukfu. I buy a lot of cheap smokes looking for a diamond in the rough. I have plenty more candidates for further experiments. Flavored coffees will definitely be on the list. As far as spirits go, I have seen a few good ideas on here and might have to give that a try as well.
One I will also consider in the future is beer. Maybe some hops and barley? Not sure how it would work but I'm looking into it.

Well, I smoke the first Whole Coffee Bean tonight while watching my daughter play roller hockey. To be honest, even though the smell is transferring to the cigar, there does not seem to be any change in the flavor. The cigars have only been infusing since Sunday night so we'll see what happens in a few more days. I'll probably wait untill next Sunday and take notes at the one week mark.

It's been a little over two weeks now so I thought I might revisit the tupperdore and see how the experiment is going.

Orange Peel - These sticks still smell like death so I decided it was best to just chuck 'em.

Cinnamon Stick - There is definitely a change to the flavor of these smokes though absolutely no change in smell. Unfortunately, the flavor is coming through rather bitter. I guess I shouldn't be surpirsed because you must add sugar to cinnamon to make it sweet. The fact that this one is working will have me checking back on it again next week. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to get the sugar into the cinnamon. So far I'm thinking about simply adding some sugar or maybe a marshmallow?

Whole Bean Coffee - The coffee smell is subsiding a bit and is no longer overwhelming the tobacco. It's more of a 50/50 deal now. I can't say that the smoke tastes like coffee but the flavor has definitely changed. On their own, these cigars are HARSH! The coffee infusion has merely smoothed it out a bit making it almost tolerable to smoke. I might be tempted to think that a couple weeks rest is the culprit for the developing smoothness but I saved a few control sticks and they are still HARSH! That and the fact that the control, Cinnamon Stick and Whole bean Coffee all taste slightly different leads me to believe that the infusion is indeed happening.

I will say that if I was ever to do this again, and I do plan on doing so, I would definitely use different stock. If anybody can reccommend a good cheap smoke I would appreciate it. What I would be looking for is a smoke that is cheap due to it's utter lack of flavor. Super mellow but not horrible. Any ideas? A buck a stick or less would be ideal.

Thanks
Jon

Oh, man! As an occasional home brewer, I love the smell of hops!!! I don't know how they would go with a cigar, but I'd certainly give it a try!

Sounds like a job for JR's Alternatives to Macanudos.

I'm actually surprised the cinnamon is getting infused. Does this mean the dry cinnamon is penetrating the wrapper & getting into the filler?

I'm not exactly sure. Perhaps a jungle elder might be able to help here? The way I've heard it is that the tobacco absorbs the aroma like a sponge and it is them imparted to the flavor of the smoke. I was pretty surprised too because the cinnamon was giving off the least aroma. Perhaps the aroma of the cinnamon is somehow more compatable with the flavor of the tobacco in some way? If you think about it, we use Spanish Cedar in our humidors for the same effect and cinnamon is in fact tree bark. Hmmmm.....

Run up to Walgreen's and pick up some Blender's Gold Churchills. (22 for 10) theyre a good smoke for the price(if the experiment sucks, ur not out a whole lot)and theyre smooth and mild by themselves. Could be worth a try
