Cliff Notes at the bottom for the TLDR folks.

I have been smoking and storing cigars for over 15 years and I have never had this problem. I can't keep the humidity low enough in my humidor. It holds 300 cigars and has 225+ in it plus my Cigar Oasis that has bee faithfully keeping it humid for years (replaced the cartridge a couple times).

All of the sudden over the summer the humidity shot up to almost 90% and I haven't been able to get it under control since. I have removed all the humidification devices and it still stayed around 80%.

The ambient humidity varies from 55% to 65% in the house depending on the weather. I leave the lid open sometimes and it will drop to 72%-74% which doesn't make sense to me. How can an open box have higher humidity than the room it's in?

I have salt testes three hygrometers and all checkout within acceptable range. The box has been open for three days now with no humidification device and it's at 71% which isn't the worst thing, but I prefer closer to 67%

I have tried oven baking my Heartfelt beads and putting them in the humidor completely dry to absorb the excess humidity but it didn't work at all. These beads are 10 years old and may not be working as I saturated them one time and some pieces crack off of them from time to time.

I have taken the cigars out of the humidor and left the humidor in a small room with a dehumidifier running to make sure the box wasn't soaked. Dried it out real good and after about three hours I was back to crazy high humidity.

What the hell can I do to get this back under control? Will new/more Heartfelt beads do the trick? Cat litter maybe?

Cliff Notes

I need to get humidity lowered and constant before I kill myself.
Humidity is crazy high +80% if I don't manage it every day.
Hygrometers work (salt tested).
Ambient humidity 55%-65%.
No humidification device in humidor at all.
Running a dehumidifier and leaving box open to keep humidity somewhat low.
Need something to help out. Beads, Kitty litter, Silica Gel????

All help will be appreciated!

Welcome aboard.

If your room is 55-65 rh, I would leave the doors open
and let them settle own.
I have seen over humidified cigars take a month to go from Rh
to 63 rh.
There is also a great chance that you have washed all the the salt off
the beads.
I would start fresh with Beads/KL ...

Not sure you need a CO for a 300 ct Hummie ???

Stop on over to the New Puffer Fish forum and introduce yourself.
A lot of great guys here willing to help...

Thank you. I probably don't need a CO for that Humi, but since I had it I used it and I like to not have to constantly be checking on it. I would like to switch to a wine cooler, but I am afraid to until I figure out what is driving this crazy humidity.

I actually threw a hygrometer in an empty cooler and damned if it doesn't stay at 75%. That is why I was thinking the beads/KL might be the way to go.

I am in NH
I run the 150 qt coolers and a cpl desktops
Beads in the Desktops, KL/Beads in the coolers.
I am able to maintain 62-66 all yr long.
Have not added water to beads/kl since April.
Have had to dry out the Beads/kl a few times this Winter.

I now have dry beads/Kl in a tupperware, so I can just substitute when I need to.

Welcome to Puff!

I wish the rh here was 65% or lower here. It is pushing towards 90 degrees with the rh at 81 and rising.

If it was me, I would run out and get some tupperware or such. Clean it to remove any smell, put your cigars in with a hygro and see where the rh is for the cigars. Once determined, put some new beads or kitty litter in the tupperdor(s) Dry to lower the rh. The absolute best I get in the wood boxes is about 68%. The tupperdors with a good seal seem to stay at 63% +/- a degree or two at most.

One of my cheap wood humidors took over 3 weeks to stabilize after my doofus dog tried to open it without me knowing it. Fortunately, it was all the cigars from samplers that were not very good to me.

What kind of KL do you recommend? The only one I see at Petco that is silica has blue beads in it as well and I assume these are for adding scent/smell which I am not sure would be good for the cigars.

At least a few of these cigars are not easily replaceable and I'm getting worried at this point.

For the sake of time, any silica kl will work as long as it is UNSCENTED. This is important enough to say again, unscented!

Do not worry about the blue ones.

Depending on the condition of your cigars, it may take some time to bring them back to the rh you want. Do not try to rush the conditioning, but it is never a bad idea to add more kl.

If someone can confirm this will work I will grab some today. It's the only kind available in the pet stores near me:

Edit=Turns out I can't post a link, darn. If someone would be so kind as to search Petsmart.com for item #11256828 and let me know if that kind will work I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thank you.

Yep, unscented 8 pound version of 11256828 is exactly what I'm running in my humi; rock solid at 65%. Look at item 2754135 as well; from the web page it looks like a filter but it's not, it's a bag. I picked up two of those as well, dollar each, to put the KL in.

Thank you, I'm off to buy a wine cooler and some kitty litter. I know there is a joke there somewhere, but right now I can't think of it.

Good luck man. At first I wasnt sure if kitty litter was for me, it just sounded weird. But now after trying it for a few months I would never use anything else. Me and my wallet are much happier thanks to Tony and the other guys who help promote this inexpensive and reliable humidification media.

My wife has been enjoying this so far; I get the humidor, then I bring home kitty litter, here in FL there was too much relative humidity already in the air and the kitty litter wasn't able to bring it down to where I wanted (74% to 69% but wanted 65%) so then she sees me baking the littler in the oven for an hour to get the moisture out and finally I'm dumping cat littler into fish filter bags LOL. She smokes with me though so I told her I'm doing it all for her enjoyment ha!
