Nice to meet everyone!! I've been smoking cigar's on and off my whole life. Just have been getting back into them the last say 6mo or so. Finishing seasoning my 2nd 50ct box right now(I use boveda seasoning and RH packs) and was just wanting to introduce myself to the community and to ask a few questions to see what you guys think. I have always just bought one of the cheap electronic hygrometers that aren't adjustable and then put them in a ziploc with a 84% pack and give it 24-48hrs to see how close it gets, and then use that gap(no matter if its 1-2% higher or lower) in my head when i check my boxes. I have always had trouble with boxes with windows, but i have never bought any very expensive boxes. Please forgive some of my "laymen" terms because its early on a Sunday morning and just came across this website and have been looking for a 2nd forum to get more/different/better answers from compared to the one im currently in. What is yall's opinion on glass-top desktop humidor boxes and do you go above 75-80% full on your boxes? How many use spanish cedar, regular, or a Tupperware type container? Have you used boveda for seasoning a new box/maintain your RH? If not, then what do you use and what has been your experience with it? lol I have plenty more questions to ask but i feel like that should be enough for now. Right now my first 50ct is about 85-90% full and its making me nervous so im ready for my 2nd box to finish seasoning and that way i can load it up and have some more room to expand my collection. OH! Last question, Who has tried Hiram and Solomon cigars, and what was your experience with them??

Hello and Welcome
Welcome

Welcome from Texas!

Glass top boxes are notorious for leaks , however they can be resealed, a bigger problem is the 3/16 thick veneered plywood bottom that the mass produced Chinese boxes use.
My humidor’s are anywhere from 50-95% full, more is better than less but I don’t worry about it either way.
I have and use, desktops-6 tupperdor’s-5 coolers-3 custom built humidor’s-3
I have used Boveda’s for seasoning, they are great for the small boxes, up to maybe two cubic ft, a dish/bowl/jar of distilled water with a sponge in it does just as well and better for larger boxes.
I‘ve had a few H&S smokes, some I liked and some not so much.

Welcome,
I have both most of my cigars are in tupadors. My wooden one has a glass top/bottom drawer and was losing humidity though the bottom. So I had to stick a Bovada in the drawer and now it keeps proper humidity.

In my tupadors I use thin peices of Spanish Cedar in between rows of cigars. Probably more peace of mind then a necessity.

The Wooden humidor I will only keep 50% full. But my tupadors I keep about 85-99% full.
Welcome!
Welcome from Massachusetts.
After a couple years using 65% Boveda, I realized I no longer need hygrometers. Fill your boxes as you like, Brother. It’s all good.

Welcome.

I keep my cigars that I am planning to smoke within the next month in an around 100-count humidor, which I usually keep 80%-95% full. I keep the rest of my collection in tupperdors ranging from 50-80% full. Just make sure you are using a combination of a good hygrometer and actually feeling the cigars to see how they are holding up. I live in Chicago, so I have to up the humidity in the winter and lower it in the summer.
Hey, just wondering but does anyone who uses the Boveda packs let it touch their cigars or is that something to avoid? Also, I have 72%rh boveda's for my 75ct desktop box, will that create too high of a RH in the box?

That will depend on the quality of the box, if its "leaky" then 72 may be ok, you need to put a hydrometer in the box, we aim for 65% around here (most of us ) so if your 72% bovida is keeping the box at 65% then its ok.

It doesn't matter if Bovedas touch your cigars. I prefer not to just lay then on top of my cigars, but only because they're in the way of selecting a cigar to smoke.

Using 72% RH Bovedas in your humidor depends on just how leaky it is. You certainly do not want it to be that high if it's holding that much humidity in. I shoot for 65%, but in a lot of not-so-well-sealed humidors it takes a higher Boveda pack to maintain it. Using a 69% in a wooden box to get to 65% is pretty common. If it takes a 72% or higher one to do that I'd be a little suspect of the box and probably look to retire it. Maybe just use it for storing accessories.

Our unofficial mottoes:
  • Smoke what you like, like what you smoke
  • Cello on or off, whatever you prefer
  • Cheap humidors that don't retain RH are just junk

I've never used this brand of humidor and the last time I bought a desktop humidor, Boveda was just starting up. Long story short, a friend broke my box, so he let me use part of his locker in one of the cigar clubs around here forever. Now he is moving out of town and have to move my cigars back home. The reviews(not just on the site I bought it from, but 5 total sites) all said it sells very well(uses sureseal magnet) and I'm trying one of those boveda "seasoning" packs. It came with 4 84%'s(throw in 1 per 25ct your box holds)where you let those soak for 2wks, then put in cigars and an equal count of the 4 72%'s that came in the bag. I have a digital hygrometer but it's reading 81-82 when I have it sealed in a bag with an 84%rh boveda bag, so it's not perfect but it's close(not adjustable but didn't notice that on the listing when I bought it). Should I use the 72's for the first like month or two since I'm just using some boveda seasoning packs for my wood box and then swap in some 69's or 67's? Got some Cubans in my locker along with some cigars I've had on backorder for over 6mo finally getting mailed out tomorrow. So I rly don't want to do any irreversible damage to my sticks.

Welcome!

Personally I use a humidor made from MDF with a rosewood outer lining and Spanish ceder inner lining. I used gel beads to begin with, which was a lot of work, but switched to a 72% Boveda pack which wouldnt get it above 59%. I checked with the store manager who recommended seasoning it again because the MDF soaks up A LOT of moisture. I thuroughly did and it's around 69% now. Regarding the glass tops all I can tell you is that cigars daily on YouTube said he usually put a line of kit around the edges of the glass to make it seal better. Hope it helps!
