Just received a supposed letter from Western Union.

Being an investigator by trade, didn't take much to find out:
No Western Union office at address provided.
No such company as the one listed on the letter at the supposed address.
They provide a fax number that is unpublished (for a business?).
Called their 800 phone number listed on the letter and it is a generic voice mail with no options to speak to anyone. It makes sure it tells me if I don't claim my check it will be sent to the state (3 x's in the message to be exact - think they want me to jump and act fast?)

They tell me they sent me a check 6 years ago for $1.60 and I have yet to cash it.
However, if I wish to cash it, send them my signature, my address where it should be mailed, a copy of my license or passport, my contact phone number, and send it all to that unpublished fax number. I am surprised they are not asking for a photo of my naked butt for better planning.

Now, say to yourself, wouldn't it be easier to just write me a new check if they really owe me that?
Wonder how many would just fax all this personal info back?
Wouldn't it possibly work better if they told me it was for a whole lot more money?

Truly amazing!

Actually no... human nature is greedy, but if it was a whole lot more it would make even more people suspicious. Most people want every peny owed to them and at that small mount they will think it is realistic.

Dear Mr. Blueface.

Thank you for your feedback.
We have now added picture of naked butt to our required documentation list.
Also I'm pleased to inform you that your initial amount of $1.60 has accumulated substantial interest over the last six years and you will be receiving a check in the amount of $1.72! Congratulations.

yeah, i recently received a letter from what would seem to be my local hospital asking for payment for some lab work....from 2005....that....i don't remember. i probably would've fell for this, except that 6 months ago, a buddy of mine was tellin me that someone was masquerading as Sierra Vista Medical and was sending out bogus letters.

fun stuff.

unfortunately, my dad fell for one of these. they called him at his burger shop (dad is an immigrant), said they'd do this and that, asked him for a bank account number, address, etc. next thing he knows, his bank is callin him askin if he can confirm that he wants to remove $9k from his account.

thank god for bank fraud protections.

You ought to send them one anyway as a gesture out of the kindness of your heart...:D

What would it take to put an address to their fax/phone number? I'm not an investigator so I wouldn't know but it would certainly be fun to go say hi to these guys.

There is a new trend coming out of Africa contacting both English and US residents claiming a long lost relative died with millions and that their law firm (Which usually claims England) will be willing to execute and promise 60% of a multi-million dollar inheritance, but they would need such and such personal information and $5000-$10000 dollar retainer fee up front. There are people buying it. How sad. :gn :gn :gn :gn
