CI's "Unsmokeables": they can't be THAT bad...

...or can they?

I make a ~90 mile trek to my parents' house a couple of times a month to visit. I've been doing this for approximately 15 years...so you can imagine how boring that hour-and-a-half drive has become. A cigar in my hand certainly helps relieve the boredom of the trip...but these "driving" cigars are more or less just something to stick in my mouth and play with with my hands. Sure, I smoke them, but I'm not really "in" the experience. Hence, the search for a cheapo, not terribly disgusting cigar for the road.

My requirements are simple -
1) CHEAP - smoking a pricey cigar while driving would be a total waste, IMO
2) BIG - I prefer Toros as a rule, but I'd like something to fill up the entire hour-and-a-half trip. So I'm looking for a Churchill
3) Not gross. I'm not looking for something with subtle nuances, I'm not looking for anything complex, just something that is somewhat pleasant on the palate. Actually, it doesn't even have to taste very good, as long as it doesn't taste too bad LOL.

CI's "Unsmokeables" have intrigued me ever since they first caught my eye. What a fantastic marketing tactic! The descriptions are full of such statements as, "mellow, smooth, and not vomit-inducing;" "not half bad...not half good, either;" "a questionable brand complemented by a dubious blend;" you get the idea. A bundle of 20 churchills for $20. How bad can they be? Let's find out!

I am, at heart, a cheap bastage. I admit it, I acknowledge it. 20 churchills for $20, however, is NOT cheap if I smoke only one and throw away 19. So I was definitely hesitant to buy them...until I noticed that 5 packs are available on C-Bid. YES! A 5 pack each of Hesitant Pirates, Dark Sharks, and Avocado Limited Reserves has been resting in my humi for a little over a month. This morning, I noticed that I'm fresh out of usual "driving" cigar, a Quorum churchill.

So....let's see just how bad the Unsmokeables are.

You sir, are a brave brave man...

Those things will give your cancer cancer. Nothing like cardboard and oak leaves rolled up.

I can find you a decent cigar at any price range really. Give me your price range and I will find you something ;)
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm inclined to take you up on this. Ever since I started digging into cigars I've been looking for that perfect bang-for-the-buck: a cheapo stick that smokes like it's worth a lot more (at least to me...it's so subjective).

I've had the Dark Shark and it was pretty uneventful ( got it in a grab bag of cheap cigar PIF's ) I'd rather smoke a Drug Store cigar like an Optimo rather than CI's unsmokeables to be honest.
That's what I was thinking if you're looking for something under $2 a stick.

One would think that there woulnd't be draw issues with machine mades either.

I just got a Dog rocket bomb from Cliff today (By request, no one is that mean!) and yeah, the avacado is a bit scary, I mean it's actually green. I've always wanted to try a Candela, but this is downright frightening.

Reviews of all three to follow, and thanks Cliff, if I don't make it, tell my next of kin to bomb the crap out of puff! :rotfl:

Avocado Limited Reserve

As the others, this is a 7x50 churchill. The Avocado, as the name implies, is GREEN...as in, candela wrapped. I was expecting a greenish-tinted brown, but this thing is GREEN. It's my first candela, so I really don't know what to expect. This cigar actually has a somewhat better appearance than the other two...the wrapper isn't torn, the foot isn't raggedy, the cigar is straight and not lumpy. There are a good many veins, but not too bad. The cigar has no smell at all, prelight draw is equally tasteless.

LET'S SPARK THIS BIG GREEN STOGIE!!!

1st third - Lights up nice and easy, draw is very middle-of-the-road. It's not producing a huge amount of smoke...I'd definitely prefer more smoke, but it's not bad enough to bother me quite yet. On the first few puffs, I'm tasting very faint sweetness and something else (greenish tasting???) that I can't quite put my finger on. Retrohaling brings out that familiar unknown-vegetable-yuck of the other two unsmokeables. I'm pretty much convinced at this point that all three of these cigars use the same filler and binder and just use different wrappers...how else could three different cigars have the same weird yuck background taste? I'm only about an inch in when suddenly, what started as a VERY mild cigar becomes completely tasteless. I'm puffing the heck out of it, and retrohaling huge mouthfuls of smoke, smoke is literally billowing from my nose...and I taste NOTHING. Wow...that's weird.

If I were driving with nothing better to do, maybe I'd keep working on it and cross my fingers and hope for a little more flavor to come through. But I'm home, with a couple hundred cigars that I *know* I enjoy in my humi. I muscled through the other unsmokeables while driving, but just to sit outside and suck on this completely tasteless green stick seemed like a major waste of my time. So, at right around the one-third mark, I gave up.

Overall impression - Personally, I think I'd prefer a crappy tasting cigar to a cigar with no taste at all. Someone who enjoys very mild smokes might get a little more out of this than me...and TBH, I *might* have enjoyed it a little more as my first smoke of the day (but that's an awfully big *might*).

Out of curiosity, I tore it apart just to satisfy my curiosity - yep, 100% long leaf...well, maybe 75% long leaf and 25% long stems and sticks, that is.

Experiment is over. Conclusion - CI's Unsmokeables truly are unsmokeable. I smoke cheap cigars, I enjoy cheap cigars, I've got the palate of a goat...and I couldn't even smoke them. I've had three of the nine brands, and will NOT buy any of the others to try, no matter how hilarious the Ron Mexico band is, or how weirdly intriguing the Raji's Untimely Demise sounds.

I sent phager a few to see if he'd like them (hey...he asked! LOL), but I expect he won't. I saved 3 of the Dark Sharks, and I think/hope that they might be OK for driving cigars. Will I ever buy a bundle? I seriously doubt it.

Thanks for reading my reviews, guys. Believe it or not, I enjoyed the experience. One of the things that keeps this hobby interesting is that sometimes you've got to just jump out there and try something or else you'll never truly know. Even smoking a bad cigar is a learning experience and works to further develop your palate. Again, thanks for reading!!!

I'm thinking the Ron Mexico is the gem out of the whole lot.
I assume this has been covered before, but just in case:

In March 2005, Sonya Elliott filed a civil lawsuit against Vick alleging she contracted genital herpes from him in the autumn of 2002 and that he failed to inform her that he had the disease.[35] Elliot further alleged that Vick had visited clinics under the alias "Ron Mexico" to get treatments and thus knew of his condition. On April 24, 2006, Vick's attorney, Lawrence Woodward, revealed that the lawsuit had been settled out of court under undisclosed terms.[36] Many fans bought custom jerseys from NFL.com with Vick's number 7 and the name "MEXICO" on the back. The NFL has since banned customizing jerseys with the name Mexico.[37]

Yeah, straight up the a** by the sound of it! I can't wait to read reviews of the Reyes cigars I sent.... hopefully they are a bit better than these!
I'm sure they will be, bro. Again, thanks for the smokes, I'm looking forward to trying them out. I'll be sure to post some reviews and let you know what I think!

Free Cubas are pretty good and the toros and robustos are a buck a stick. I got one from Shuckins a while back for the Sultan Churchill review. It's not a roller coaster ride of flavor, but you won't find brussel sprouts in there either. Fifty cigars for fifty bucks ain't half bad. Plus, there's a topless lady on the band.

I still have that one that I received from Shuckins. I rather liked the magellan Dominicans that he sent. It was not too bad for a small, cheap cigar.

Boy I'm glad I didn't try those avacados. At least they aren't avacado flavoured like I said XD

Currently I only have cigars on weekends, as I don't have an hour during the week between college and near full time job, but that allows me to smoke $6-9 sticks instead of 3-5 XD

I got bombed with about 50+ of these things! I tried one........ well, I tried it.
I got an idea after i put it down a quarter the way in. I unwrapped the wrapper to see the composition of it. There were two whole leaves; the wrapper and a piece in the middle for the "rollers" to glue the floor scraps onto. I don't recall which one it was.

I gave a few handfuls to a guy who smokes with us. He couldn't tell a VSG from a Monte White. He has no pallete. He told me later on he liked them!!! I told him, I'lll hook you up with some more!

Back to the Hesitant Pirate....
OK I've only been into the hand-rolled sticks a little while. My Marine son showed me the difference between Garcia Vega and Montecristo just last year, so my palate isn't quite as advanced as some. But I got the Po' Boy from CI and headed tot he golf course. The band was interesting and appearance of the wrapper was OK. Veins, but OK. Im not that fussy....yet. It felt good and had even color. It lit OK and firs impression was pretty generic. Yes, it was burning, good smoke, nice draw. tasted like burning leaves, but I was golfing so no biggie. About an inch and a half in the flavor smoothed out and had a distinct nutty- and dare I say pleasant- flavor. I really enjoyed it for a little while. (Refer to the statement about my palate not being very advanced). Once that left off, the flavor turned to slightly moldy with a hint of ammonia- neither ranks high on my preference list. But fortune shined her lovely light on me and the thing wouldn't stay lit for the last third. I love a problem that solves itself! Will I smoke the other one? Eh, maybe for chuckles, or Ill stick it in the herf for when someone wants to bum a stick. Ill trudge through the others- unless they are seriously bad they can accompany me on a fishing trip or after a hike. Chances are Ill have a Rocky Patel on stand-by just in case!
