I just got the new JR catolog and in it they were selling cigars that were packaged in an ammo box. That seems like a pretty good idea for a humidor. Have any of my fellow BOTL's os SOTL's tried this? If you think this is a good idea I might have to head to the local army surplus.

If you can make sure it seal pretty well and can find a reasonable way to line it with Spanish Cedar it might be pretty good. There are some threads available that go into detail about converting something into a humidor.

yeah sounds like it would fit the bill. i have a small ammo box/medical kit. it's the army green or whatever. i use it for my paraphenilia, matches, lighters, can of dip, etc etc. man throw some cedar in there and that'd be a pretty nice travel humi.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Where does one get Spanish cedar when not in Spain?

I got more ammo cans then I can shake a stick at here. Comes from the other hobby. One thing I would make damn sure of is to let it air out but GOOD. When they have been closed for a while and you open them up you can smell the paint real heavy. I would not want a cigar to taste like that. I would say open them up and leave them open for a few weeks to a month. Also to make sure you keep a good seal is to get some silicone oil and put it on the rubber ring that goes around the lid from time to time. They are real prone to dry rotting.

The one in the catalog shows to be already lined with cedar. The deal on JR is 105 Belinda sticks, the ammo box and a colibri lighter for 119.95.
Thats the one I saw. I was trying to figure out another way of getting a cedar lined ammo box without ordering 105 Belinda cigars.

Wooden cigar boxes are typically Spanish Cedar. The inside probably doesn't have to be perfect. The cedar is there for it's ability to absorb and retain moisture.

A good ammo box will have an extremely tight seal, air circulation would be a concern. Like a coolerdor with a very tight seal, you'd want to air it our every now and then.

I bought an Army Surplus box for $7 and fixed it up as my HERF-A-DOR. Just added cedar from old cigar boxes and bought a cheap humi-tube I filled with some beads, then decorated with some computer generated decals. I don't use it for long term storage but it should work fine if you let in some fresh air occasionly!

I would also pass on the Belindas.............. :pu
