I flew to New Orleans last Tue evening for a 1-day consulting gig on Wed. Tue evening I walk into Harrah's for a game of $3-6 fixed limit holdem. I hate this particular poker room because it is poorly lighted and because the nearbly slot machine noise is deafening.

Anyway's it's a good way to past the time, and at these low limits I can usually walk out with a few dollars, plus I get free JD on the rocks. So I sit down at what turns out to be a friendly table. The play is good, I have to play really tight at these low limits, and I am up about $80. I was thinking of leaving at about that time.

I stay for another hand, then fold. The hand continues. The flop comes A-A-9. I can see the cards of the guy next to me, because after I fold he doesn't mind holding them up a little. He's holding an A-9 and therefore already has a full house. Everyone else folds but for one other player. I figure the other player must have a 9 and maybe the other A. Next card comes and now we have A-A-9-2. The players check. The river card then comes as an A. Now the board has A-A-9-2-A. I know the guy next to me has the winning hand with four aces [coinky-dink on my handle]. He bets. Everyone at the table is hoping that the other player calls and does not fold due to the poker room jackpot. This is because if the four aces are played heads up till the end, then the whole table will win the poker room jackpot that is currently at $9,000. The other player calls. The showdown exposes the four A's as the winning hand over 9's/A's full house. The other player had a pair of 9's. The table erupts in cheers and applause, and then the rest of the poker room joins in. Here is how the split of the $9,000 goes.

Winning hand gets 25%
Losing hand gets 50% [this is known as a reversal]
All other hands split the remaining 25%. So my cut was about $270

Not bad for folding before the flop, eh?

I stuck around a little longer for some loose play, another JD on the rocks, and then left.

Through study/reading and practice with a simulator. I am generally profitable in 8 out 10 games in live casino play [if tight discipline is maintained]. Fun stuff, free drinks, and there's always decent girl watching around.

Next gig with a poker venue will be SoCal in Feb.

true, don't remember where though.
It's in my profile. I took several months off from the cigar sites. Was here as Four Aces before, and other boards as Mike Travels. Mostly I post over at CigarWise now.

Cheers,

Thanks for the invite, but I only do live play. There was an interesting article on internet players in the newspaper today. Apparently some guys are doing this for a living. That's way beyond for me.

Welcome to Club Stogie!

Great story, $270 for folding on the flop ain bad at all :D
Yeah I always thought these jackpots were just pie in the sky. The lesson for me was to keep the jackpot conscious when one is playing. Big lesson for me.

Apparently both players knew they had to go heads-up past the river. I would not have known that, or kept that in mind. If I was the winning hand I would have raised aggressively focusing on building the pot on the table and chasing the other bettors off, and would not have thought about the jackpot at all. If I was the losing hand, I would have probably folded after the flop. I'm glad these two guys kept the jackpot in mind.
