any one else do this?

OK, So before I clip the end of my cigar I put it in my mouth and taste the wrapper. I do this for a moment until the end is somewhat wet, not soaked but damp. I usually rotating the cigar between my lips. I was told by my friend that it allows for a better cut. What do you guys think?

I do this about 50% of the time. I read somewhere that it does make for a cleaner cut. I also read somewhere that if you cup with the cello still on it will keep the blade(s) from gumming up. Mostly, I use a punch anyways except on pointed heads.

When I start getting unclean cuts, I buy a new cutter. I've been using the same one for at least 20 sticks now and I still get clean cuts. No signs of wearing. I expect it to go another 20 at least. Not to draw any undue associations, but I find that pre-smoke wetting is a common practice amongst people who roll their own. And not necessarily tobacco I've never seen it done with cigars.

I think damn near everybody I know that smokes cigars wets the cap before cutting.....usually anyhow. No offense but I think a cutter should last more than 40 cuts!!! Ive got a cheap $9 Colibri Firebird thats got 5 times that on it and still cuts like it was new.

Re: any one else do this?

I'm not so sure I do it because I think it's going to get me a cleaner cut. (even though I stated that a friend told me that) I have sort of a ritual that I follow.
First the decision is made to partake in a cigar.
I open my Humidor and take a big wiff. (I just love the way it smells in there)
Then I pic a stick. usually based on mood and how much time I have.
Then I remove the Cello and taste the wrapper. (I've found interesting flavors here)
Then I cut it.
Toast it for about 30 seconds or more. (I only have a bic lighter)
Then I taste the wrapper again and clean up any leaf stragglers from the cut.
Then I light it and enjoy a good smoke!

So I think the wetting of the cap for me is more of a tasting thing. not really to get a better cut.

I'd be afraid to bite the cap off for fear of damaging the smoke. I guess with experience comes confidence.

Re: any one else do this?

I cut mine dry and haven't had a problem getting a clean cut. I have had a few friends that swear that the proper way to cut a cigar is after applying so me saliva to the cap. A few years ago I worked in a cigar store part time and the manager would get mad as hell when someone would come in and lick their cigar and use the store cutter to cut their smoke.
