Check the date, that's a REALLY old article. Not much around at that time for desktop humidors beside florist foam, no beads, no boveda, etc. Maybe a few pioneers of kitty litter were out there but CA is a lifestyle mag and is not going to recommend that, lol. Not sure why they didn't know about being more full would he more stable though.

I was seriously thinking about typing my humidor seasoning and cigar acclimating responses in my memo section. Then copy and paste it when the need arises weekly..lol

It does come up A LOT. You and,a few others have mentioned before that instead of buying a bunch of cigars and, then worrying about the storage it'd be wiser to research the storage and, prep first.
I get it, you're excited about a big haul....now how do I store them? It catches a lot of people off guard when they see what it takes so, panic sets in. Then follows the "talk them off the ledge" speech lol.
@Hari Seldon, I did notice the date but, even then with the florist foam they could have stabilized the humi prior to introducing the cigars. Putting cigars in an unstable humi is asking for problems. I just felt that they left it too open ended and, misleading for inexperienced enthusiasts. Kind of sent the wrong message.

Oh yeah, I guess that's true. Perhaps a proper seasoning and stabilizing would have taken too long if the article had to get to print and needed to be in that month. Who knows, I would hope they give different advice and perform the test differently if they did it today.

Anybody who spends a month trying to keep the RH consistent with green foam will spend the money and switch to beads or any of the other solutions in no time. However, I have no issues with MOST humi vendors marketing with gardening foam. While KL would be more accurate I would be turned off if I received my humi with a nylon stocking and a ziplock of kitty crystals. Foam can store for months or even years while the B&M is waiting for a sale. Not sure that heartfelt beads can...

I have found that cigars help me enjoy that time between the seconds.

Seems more like an advertising piece than an article to instruct and inform. The type of test they allude to would be much too time consuming. Advertising in my opinion. This is the state of the media today. It's my opinion, I could be wrong!
